The JAM Card: Supporting inclusion through simple tools

Not all disabilities are visible. For many people, this can lead to misunderstanding, minsinterpretation, or even stereotyping.

To address this, Ireland introduced the JAM Card (Just A Minute) in 2012. This simple tool – available as a plastic card or an app – enables people with hidden disabilities, communication barriers, or social anxiety to discreetly ask for a little extra time and understanding in everyday interactions.

Alongside the card, training was developed to support organisations and workplaces in becoming more aware of communication barriers and hidden disabilities. Businesses that have adopted the scheme report significant benefits, such as:

  • increased customer loyalty and positive recommendations,
  • enhanced reputations as socially responsible organisations,
  • improved employee engagement and awareness.

The initiative has been highly successful, with:

  • more than 160.000 card users worlwide,
  • over 20.000 people trained,
  • and more than 3.000 companies registered as JAM-friendly.

Within the DiTL project, we are taking inspiration from the JAM Card scheme as we design and develop new tools and resources to foster greater inclusion, awareness, and support for individuals with communication barriers or hidden disabilities.
